Background
At 2.30am on the 27th of December 2023 in Attleborough, Norfolk, an East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopter was targeted from the ground by someone using a hand held laser device with intent of impairing the pilot’s vision. A video of the incident has been released by various news sources.
I managed to obtain a still image that had been taken from the original video footage, showing the green laser clearly to the mid right hand side.
After determining as many as possible useful ground control points between the raw air photo and those on the Attleborough town centre base map, I managed to georeference the image below:
The thick yellow lines are the road centres taken from Open Street Map. Not the sharpest georeference of an oblique air photograph that I have ever done given the source image, although close enough to provide a good enough estimate of where the laser was located.
Marking the laser position from the image above, I was then able to plot this onto the base map of Attleborough town centre.
The approximate location of the laser being close to the entrance of the Lidl supermarket car park in Queens Road.
To conclude
The above information has been forwarded to the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Norfolk Police in the hope that it might be of some use in tracking who was behind the attack.
